Sapphires, blue ones in particular, are the traditional birthstone for the month of September. Sapphires in general come in a variety of different colors and even include July's birthstone, the ruby. Sapphires can either be vivid (clear and near perfect) or saturated (opaque). Like all natural stones, Sapphires can be easily made in laboratories and fakes are a real thing! Sapphire is very hard and is often used in the crystal of high-end watches such as Omegas, Rolex, Movado, etc. Even the space shuttle's windows were made of sapphire!
